Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the lower 48 United States and lies in the southern part of the Sierra Nevada range of California. Its granite pinnacles and ridges rise more than 10,000 feet from the valley below. Its high summit ad promise of a spectacular experience make Mount Whitney a popular destination for thousands of visitors. Mount Whitney was named for Josiah Dwight Whitney (1819-1896) state geologist of California.
