Ranked sixth of the “Seven Summits’ is Vinson Massif, the highest point of Antarctica and last to be conquered. Unlike a number of other mountains in Antarctica, Vinson is not a volcano; under the snow is solid rock without a hint of magma. This continental high point was first spotted by U.S. Navy aircraft in 1957 and named in the same year after U.S. congressman, Carl G. Vinson, an advocate for exploration.
