Twenty-five miles northeast of Billings, Montana rests the large sandstone formation known as Pompeys Pillar. The Pillar was visited by Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition on July 25, 1806. Captain Clark etched his name and the date on the rock which is the last visible, physical evidence of the Expedition. It also contains many Native American petroglyphs, suggesting that area has been inhabited by humans for around 11,000 years.
