The summit of Colorado’s most well known peak was first attained by three members of surveyor Stephen Long’s expedition in 1820, fourteen years after the failed attempt of Lt. Zebulon Pike. This majestic peak was the inspiration for the poem “America the Beautiful,” by Katherine Lee Bates. An auto road and a cog railroad to the summit make the peak a popular destination for American families and international visitors.
