The Great Smoky Mountains boast 16 peaks over 6,000 feet and are among the highest mountains in the entire Appalachian Mountain Range. Compared to the Rockies or Cascades, the Great Smokies are very old mountains. Some rock in the park is over a billions years old, pre-dating life on earth, though most originated 450-800 million years ago. The majority of rock is sedimentary, formed by accumulations of clay, silt, sand and gravel beneath ancient oceans.
