La Madre Mountain, with its rugged gray cliffs, is a dominant geologic feature in the northwest side of the Las Vegas valley. The La Madre Mountains were formed by the Keystone Thrust Fault, which is internationally regarded as the finest example of such a fault. Its gray limestone cliffs are a sharp contrast to the red and buff colored sandstone formations nearby.
