Mount Kosciuszko is the highest mountain on mainland Australia and is part of a long chain of mountains running along the Australian east coast. In 1840 Polish geologist and explorer Count Paul de Strzelecki named the mountain Kosciuszko, in honor of a Polish patriot and freedom fighter. The Aboriginals called the mountain Tar-Gan-Gill. The site holds special significance for ceremony, socializing, sharing, and trading.
