Everest, the most inspiring of peaks, attracts the part of the human spirit of exploration which seeks superlativeshighest, best, most. In the early 1800’s the British began the greatest of surveying projectsthe Great Trigonometrical Survey of India. Peak XV, at 29,028 feet was determined to be the highest peak in the world and was named after the father of Indian geodesy, Sir George Everest. The Nepalese name is Sagarmatha, meaning “forehead of the universe” The Tibetan name is Chomolungma, for “mother goddess of the earth.” Using the most current Global Positioning System technology, the American Everest Expedition of 1999 completed GPS surveys establishing a height of 29,035 feet. The first successful ascent was made in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Since then more than 2000 have reached the summit.
