The naming of a set of peaks in the Sawatch Range dominates their stories. In 1865, Professor Josiah Dwight Whitney, a graduate of Yale University and former director of the California Geological Survey, accepted a position with Harvard. In 1869 he led the first class of the Harvard Mining School on an exploration of the Sawatch Range. He named two notable peaks at the time–Mount Harvard, after the sponsoring institution and Mount Yale after Whitney’s alma mater. This set the precedent for naming peaks in this range after universities and inspired collegiate rivalries.
