Thirty years later, following the May 18, 1980 eruption of the beautiful stratovolcano Mount Saint Helens, the Native American moniker “smoking mountain” still applies. The Cascades Volcano Observatory reports on its website “continuous intermittent volcanic activity and …occasional eruptions of steam and ash, occasional pyroclastic flows” and “…intermittent extrusion of dome-forming.”
