While the trail to its summit is long, it is accessible to the average hiker. It and neighboring Mount Massive (14,421 feet) are in the vicinity of Leadville, the highest city in the USA The first documented ascent was in 1874 by a member of the Hayden Survey, H.W. Stuckle
